Are You Happy? Truly? (And Why It’s Okay If You’re Not Sure)

When was the last time someone asked you, “How are you?”

And when was the last time you answered with something other than, “I’m good, thanks! How are you?”

We live in a world of automatic responses. We scroll through highlight reels on social media, celebrate the big wins, and keep moving forward. But in the quiet moments—maybe when you’re driving home, or right before you fall asleep—the big question sometimes floats to the surface.

Am I happy? Truly?

It’s a heavy question, isn’t it? But it doesn’t have to be a scary one. In fact, asking it might be the most positive thing you do for yourself all year.

Happiness Isn’t a Permanent State of Bliss

One of the biggest misconceptions about happiness is that it means feeling ecstatic 24/7. We often think that if we aren’t smiling, laughing, or crushing our goals every single second, we must be doing something wrong.

But true happiness—the kind that warms your soul—is usually much quieter.

It’s not just the fireworks; it’s the fireplace. It’s a sense of contentment. It’s the feeling that even if things aren’t perfect (and they never are), you are generally okay with where you are and where you are going. It is resilience, not the absence of problems.

The “Sunday Night” Test

If you aren’t sure where you stand, try the Sunday Night Test.

As the weekend winds down and the reality of the upcoming week sets in, what is your primary emotion?

Dread? (A sign something might need to change.)

Neutrality? (A sign you might be on autopilot.)

Peace? (A sign you are aligned with your purpose.)

If you feel a sense of peace—even if you have a busy, stressful week ahead—you are likely anchored in a deeper kind of happiness. It means your life aligns with your values.

3 Small Ways to Reconnect with Joy

If you feel like you’ve lost the signal, don’t panic. You don’t need to quit your job or move to an island (unless you want to!). You can start small:

Edit Your Inputs: Look at the content you consume daily. Does it make you feel inspired or inadequate? Unfollow the noise that makes you feel “less than.”

Define Your Version of Success: Society tells us success looks like a specific car, house, or job title. But maybe for you, success is a slow morning with coffee or the freedom to create. Define it for yourself.

Practice “The Pause”: Once a day, stop what you are doing for 60 seconds. Just breathe. Check in with yourself. Ask, “What do I need right now?”

It’s a Journey, Not a Destination

If you asked yourself the question today and the answer was “No” or “I don’t know,” that is okay. Awareness is the first step toward alignment.

Happiness isn’t a trophy you win and keep on a shelf. It’s a garden you tend to. Some seasons are for blooming, and some are for resting.

So, are you happy? Truly?

Whatever the answer is, be honest with yourself. Because the truth is the only place where real happiness can start.
